Why You Can’t Spot-Reduce Fat at the Gym, and How Fat-Dissolving Injections Can Target Stubborn Pockets

Guest post from Shelby Hall, RN, founder of Skinfidelity and nurse injector specializing in non-surgical body contouring.

If you’ve been consistent with training and nutrition, you’ve probably heard this frustrating truth: there is no such thing as spot reduction.

No amount of crunches will selectively melt belly fat. No number of tricep extensions will exclusively eliminate arm jiggle. When you lose body fat through exercise and diet, your body decides where it comes from based on genetics, hormones, and overall energy balance. You can build muscle, improve composition, and lower total body fat percentage, but you cannot command fat to leave one specific area while sparing others.

That’s why so many dedicated fitness enthusiasts reach a plateau where the scale has moved, strength is up, and overall leanness is better… yet a small, stubborn pocket remains. The double chin that never quite disappears. The lower-belly pooch that refuses to tighten. The bra-line fat, love handles, or soft area on the upper arms that seems immune to further progress. (If your overall progress has stalled, start with our guide to overcoming weight loss plateaus.)

This is exactly where fat-dissolving treatments can step in.

How Fat Dissolving Works

Fat-dissolving injections (known in Canada as Belkyra, and in the US as Kybella) use deoxycholic acid, a substance your body already produces to help break down dietary fat. When carefully injected into a localized fat deposit, it disrupts the membranes of fat cells in that specific area. The treated cells are destroyed, and the body gradually clears the released contents over the following weeks.

Because the treated fat cells are gone, the reduction in that pocket is long-lasting, as long as overall body weight remains stable. This is fundamentally different from general weight loss, where fat cells simply shrink and can enlarge again if calories are in surplus.

At Skinfidelity, founder and master nurse injector Shelby Hall, RN, offers fat-dissolving treatments at an advanced level at clinics in Mississauga (Erin Mills) and Kleinburg, serving Vaughan and the wider GTA. The most common area treated is the submental region (under the chin), with additional off-label applications for stubborn pockets on the stomach, bra line, upper arms, and love handles when appropriate.

The Ideal Candidate: That Last 10 Pounds or the Stubborn Pocket

Fat dissolving is not a weight-loss solution or a substitute for training and nutrition. It works best for people who are already close to their goal weight, typically those dealing with the final 5 to 10 pounds or a discrete, pinchable pocket of fat that has proven resistant to further diet and exercise.

Good candidates are generally:

  • At or near a healthy, stable weight
  • In good overall health
  • Seeking refinement of a specific area rather than large-scale fat reduction

Results are progressive. Most people need an average of 2 to 3 sessions, with visible improvement typically peaking 4 to 6 weeks after each treatment as the body processes the destroyed fat cells. Sessions are spaced at least four weeks apart, depending on individual response and the area treated.

What to Expect: Side Effects and Downtime

Some reaction in the treated area is expected and is part of how the treatment works. The most common effects are:

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Tenderness or pain, which can last a few days
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Redness
  • Firmness or small areas of hardness

These effects are usually temporary and settle on their own. Swelling is often most noticeable in the first few days, so many people plan treatment around their social calendar. Numbness, swelling, or firmness can occasionally last longer than a month. Less common risks, especially when treating under the chin, are covered in detail at your consultation, and you should contact your provider right away if you notice trouble swallowing, an uneven smile, or open sores in the treated area.

Bridging Fitness Progress and Aesthetic Refinement

For many in the fitness community, the final stage of transformation is the most frustrating. You’ve done the hard work. You’ve earned the results. Yet a small area continues to undermine the overall definition you’ve built. Fat-dissolving injections offer a precise, non-surgical way to address exactly that limitation of traditional fitness approaches.

Because the treatment removes fat cells from the targeted zone, it can create a more refined contour that diet and training alone often cannot achieve. Combined with continued strength training and solid nutrition habits, the outcome is a cleaner, more balanced look that reflects the effort already invested in the gym. Our coaches can help with the training and nutrition side: see balancing strength training with cardio, how much protein you really need, or work one-on-one with a nutrition coach in Vaughan.

As with any medical aesthetic procedure, proper assessment, technique, and aftercare matter. Fat dissolving should only be performed by experienced, regulated providers who understand anatomy, candidacy, and realistic expectations.

If you’ve been consistent with your fitness routine and still have a stubborn pocket that won’t budge, a consultation can determine whether fat dissolving is an appropriate next step. It doesn’t replace the work you’ve already done. It can simply help finish what training and nutrition started.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it permanent?
The treated fat cells are destroyed and cleared by the body, so results are long-lasting. Remaining fat cells can still grow with significant weight gain, so keeping your weight stable protects your results.

Does it hurt?
Most people feel stinging or burning during the injections, and the area can feel tender, swollen, or numb for several days afterward.

How much does it cost?
Pricing is per treatment area and depends on the size of the area and how many sessions you need. You’ll get a personalized quote at your complimentary consultation.

Is Belkyra approved in Canada?
Yes. Health Canada has approved Belkyra for improving the appearance of moderate to severe fat under the chin in adults. Using it on other areas, such as the stomach, bra line, arms, or love handles, is considered off-label, and your injector will explain what that means at your assessment.

Skinfidelity offers fat-dissolving treatments under the care of licensed nurse injectors with medical director oversight. Visit skinfidelity.ca or book a complimentary consultation to discuss whether this approach aligns with your goals.
